What this mediawiki page does[takatā pūtake]

This goes in a box at the top of virtually every page. It is sometimes used for urgent messages such as appeals for funds, but in normal times just acts as an introduction or remains blank. There's a variant with a "/mi" tag: see MediaWiki_talk:Sitenotice/mi.

Overall impressions[takatā pūtake]

Ka pai! Robin Patterson 04:46, 17 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

My word "utukore" was only one of the possible translations of "free". I have since read more about concepts of Free_Software and see that we should really have a word that means "free as in free speech, not free as in free beer". A correction for our experts to sort out one day? Robin Patterson 23:44, 18 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

See discussion here. Robin Patterson 11:04, 25 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

"me"[takatā pūtake]

I deleted the 'me' from 'utukore me māhorahora' as it just feels odd in that situation. I considered matapūnenga utukore, māhorahora (with a comma); that was ok but perhaps a little ambiguous in that it made māhorahora seem like a new thought starting. I also ended up using lower case since Ki with upper case seemed odd and disconnected from the Haere mai ki wikipedia. Then I had to change E ngā reo... to e ngā reo, and Kua tae... to kua tae for consistency.... its not set in kohatu tho if it annoys - nothing is on a Wiki after all. Details of appearance[takatā pūtake]

Colours? Robin Patterson 23:44, 18 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

Colour is white as part of design of whole page. If you want colours here, I'll have to redesign the colours of the whole Hau Kāinga page Kahuroa 09:55, 26 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

Alternatives and cautions if we don't have a specific notice on every page[takatā pūtake]

No immediate problem having a blank or something else unobtrusive here and just having something equivalent at the top of particular pages (not quite in the same position but close enough for most purposes). But watch for two things:

  1. Some enthusiast restores it - thus duplicating it on whatever page(s) it was recreated on
  2. The powers that be install an appeal for funds or something like that (which we may not want showing); I'm not sure whether that always overrides a blank sitenotice; authoritative comment on this talk page would be handy for future reference. If it does override, I suggest we use a dot or dash instead of a blank.

Having seen it as a dot in a long thin rectangle, looking distinctly like a design error, I think I shouldn't have suggested that. I forget whether a blank still gives us a rectangle; if it doesn't maybe we can risk getting the occasional Wiki-general message (because they are easy to remove). Hello, good news! Thanks to FreedomFighterSparrow and Brion, unregistered users can now hide the sitenotice again. Previously, they were forced to see it continuously.

In all cases, please use the sitenotice with care, and keep in mind that occasional visitors see sitenotices on all their visits, if they visit less than once a month or they don't click "dismiss" and save a cookie. Nemo 15:43, 24 Māehe 2015 (UTC)[reply]
