Summary

Description Carving representing Tihori, ancestor of the Māori tribe Ngāti Awa of Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. From the canoe house at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Waitangi, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Tihori is depicted holding a taiaha, a weapon used in hand-to-hand combat, signifying his prowess and exploits as a warrior. Tihori is a link between Ngāti Awa and the peoples of Northland. His ancestry: From Toroa of the Mataatua canoe came Wairaka, from Wairaka came Raukura, from Raukura came Te Aowhakahaha, from Te Aowhakahaha came Kuirangi and from Kuiarangi came Tihori. Tihori married Kopura-kai-whiti of Te Marangaranga and resided at Taiwhiti-Kaeaea and Taiwhero near Putauaki/Mt Edgecumbe. He belonged to Ngā Maihi, an ancient hapu of Ngāti Awa. When Tihori decided to depart the region on his waka, Whakapaukarakia, to go to Tai-tokerau (Northland), he was prevented by the rest of Ngāti Awa from departing. Tihori then ordered his taniwha (mythical monster) to open a channel from the Rangitaiki River to the Tarawera River and to carve a new outlet to the ocean at Te Awa-o-te-Atua. His whānau (family) remained behind and their descendants are Ngā Maihi of Matahina and Te Teko in the Bay of Plenty.
