Preliminary queries

[takatā pūtake]
  1. Why is English at the tail end of the top group?
  2. My word MĀTĀPUNENGA came from one of the Maori Language Commission's books, I think - surely we don't need "encyclopedia" in a Maori sentence?

It has "ended up" not changing a lot. On the whole I think you're doing OK there, Brian. And I suspect that you are more competent with tables than I am. Robin Patterson 00:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Still to do

[takatā pūtake]

The Browse Wikipedia section, needs to be translated, to the cat.s on the wikipedia, if you can help see [[Template:MainPageIntro2]] [BrianNZ]

Categories aren't far advanced yet, and have a random mixture of English and Maori. This is where I hope our "mi 2" and better scholars will contribute. Until we have a fairly comprehensive set of high-level categories in Maori, I'm not inclined to lead readers that way. You seem to have translated a bit since writing that. OK as is for a while, I think. Robin Patterson 01:31, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Robin replying to the self-styled "FINAL" draft

[takatā pūtake]

I've not worked out whether any of my favourite creations have disappeared. Everything that is there looks good (and/or better than on the earlier version I looked at), subject to the following:

  1. I would prefer you to restore the category (so that people who reach that category by other means see that the main page is part of it).
  2. On my Cologne Blue display skin, that nice yellow pane near the top stretches over into the sidebar, which it shouldn't. Same on Template:MainPageIntro2 (perhaps no surprise).
  3. We now have the number of articles three times. I therefore suggest that the nice new "Go" box should be differently headed, because it actually searches much more than just the articles. Try something like "Search this site:".
  4. "Over 100,000 articles" is too small.
  5. I'd like to remove the "Over 1,000 articles" group of other languages; significant saving in bulk, and only a few of those (Afrikaans, Welsh, Greek, Latin, Hindi, perhaps) of interest to more than a handful of Kiwis, whereas Fijian, Samoan, Tongan, and Hawaiian could be of much more interest and aren't up to the 1000 mark yet, so don't show there (although we have them on the interwikis). Looking at the remaining languages, I see an error or two (eg Paniora has moved up to Czech) and an irritating lack of gap or punctuation before the Maori versions. The existing page has, for example, "Deutsch/Tiamana", with no mention of the English name wherever we have a Maori one; I'd prefer that style to stay. The existing page has some anomalies (probably because I was a bit hasty repairing some vandalism) such as "Itariana" on its own; that one can replace the "Italian" in your draft.
  6. The Pukapuka Taki Pātauranga box should be wider if it's no longer to have the Iwi Whānui (Kohuku) [etc] box beside it (which may, however, be just a CologneBlue quirk that needs other treatment); so there will be even fewer links that overflow beyond a single line. But/and I wonder whether the:
"Whakaraparapa
 1.1 Te Ao
 1.2 Tāngata
 1.3 All categories..."

is really useful where it is - as it's almost a very small summary listing of what's in Pukapuka Taki Pātauranga, I think it might be better closer to that box, maybe sitting above it (full width) or even sitting as a highlighted first section of column 1.

Have you checked the design with all possible skins?

Thanks for all the work so far!
