Ko ngā kupu "kaute" (i ngā reo Tonga me Māori Kuki Airani) me "‘aute" (i ngā reo Hāmoa me Tahiti)[1] he ngā ingoa mōhiohia waenga i ngā tangata Ao-o-Kiwa mō tētahi momo tipu taka mai e Āhia-ki-te-tonga-mā-rāwhiti me whakatuputupu ki ngā whenua pārūrū. Ko te ingoa pūtaiao o tēnei tipu he Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.[1][2] Kāore e tipu i Aotearoa nei. He mura me kura tona pua.
Kei te mahia te pua kaute ki te tae kura mō ngā kākahu,[3] i mahia hoki ona ngā raurau hei te rongoā ki te nganga o te kiri.[4]
